Rainbow Cafe, Cambridge

Rainbow Cafe Cambridge

The first I’d heard about Rainbow Cafe was when I heard that they didn’t accept the new five pound notes, because they contained tiiiiiiny amounts of cow.

Even as a non-meat eater myself, I thought that that was a bit much. However, on a nice afternoon Alice and I were looking for a spot to eat and this was where we ended up.

Rainbow Cafe is opposite Kings College, on a small alley off of the main tourist street. As you take the stairs down to the cafe, the air gets a bit thick and smelly. It wasn’t very pleasant.

Before I continue, I’d like to say that not every review I do is good. My colleague asked me once if I’m scared to post negative things just in case people don’t like it, and the answer is absolutely not. I’m fairly easy to please when it comes to food, as long as it’s something I can’t make myself at home and has nice staff. And that the prices are good.

Rainbow Cafe broke my first rule – I got the three bean chilli and honestly, I could have probably done just as good a job at home. It was OK.

I’m cool with the prices being a bit high, because you are paying to eat in a prime location. I know Cambridge University colleges own most of Cambridge and set the rents on businesses to be ridiculously high, so you’re not going to get a bargain of a meal if you’re near a college.

Though Alice enjoyed hers more than I did (though I forget what she ate…my photo above isn’t very descriptive), I wasn’t impressed. It’s nice to have a vegetarian and vegan friendly restaurant in town, but the overall execution of it all wasn’t as good as I’d hoped. Fine for the tourists who want that kind of thing but I think I’ll stick to the other vegetarian hotspots.

You can find Rainbow Cafe at

9A King’s Parade, Cambridge CB2 1SJ

Am I being too harsh? Let me know in the comments!

  1. I make three bean chilli and that looks a lot like mine, so I probably wouldn’t have been too impressed either.
