Is Smokeworks’ Bottomless Brunch Worth It?

Smokeworks Brunch

If New York is the city that never sleeps then Cambridge is the city that never stops eating. Mainly cake, but often other things too, like brunch. There’s enough brunch in Cambridge to fuel someone for a week.

Following from when the #YesWeCamb girls and I went to Smokeworks for dinner a few months ago, the group decided to go for the bottomless brunch to see how it works out.

The brunch is £30 for all you can eat items from the brunch menu, or £35 for that AND bottomless brunch alcohol. The usual suspects were there, with bubbles, bloody marys and gin cocktails to choose from.

When we arrived, they’d run out of eggs so we flipped the whole meal upside down by having our dessert first. I went for the alcohol version so ordered one of their earl grey gin Tom Collins and the banana and peanut butter waffles.

HO-LY SMOKES the waffles were good. I’ve been dreaming of them ever since. They were beautiful, sickly sweet (just the way I like it) and turned my hanger upside down. I was one happy bunny.

A couple of rounds of bubbles later, and we were ready for stage 2. The eggs had landed.

I went for the veggie potato hash, which was essentially a pile of tater tots with peppers on top, covered in cheese sauce with a fried egg. It really was yummy, but by this time I was getting quite sluggish. The peanut butter had slowed me down and the bubbles had me quite tipsy. I ate tater by tater, sinking further into my bar stool…

We had a bit of an eating-break for a bloody mary. I then remembered how I don’t always like them (the ones at The Station Tavern were good because I could make it myself!) I felt guilty for having been wasteful and, red-faced (probably too many drinks had been consumed by this point) I asked for another cocktail.

I sluggishly finished the tots, if only to soak up the alcohol.

So, by this time I’d eaten two courses, three glasses of fizz and two Tom Collins.

Was it worth it?

Yes and no. The food was great, there’s no doubt about it, but I wonder if it was value for money. We were (or at least I was) trying to eat more for the sake of it, and I would have been really happy just with the banana waffles and a couple of drinks for half the price of it. If you go into this trying to get the most out of it, then I think you’ll fail like I did.

Bottomless Brunch can be found at the Smokeworks on Station Hill only. The menu is here. If you go and manage to eat more than me then please let me know.
