Three Hourseshoes Madingley

Three Houseshoes Maddingley

You have not seen the air so blue. I had a set of lovely photos taken of the nibbles I had at The Three Horseshoes in Madingley, but instead of hitting the “bluetooth to computer” button, I hit the delete button. So only two photos remain. Oh, poo.

We’d had a nice walk around the American Cemetery in Madingley, as it’s on the 111 Places not to miss in Cambridge book. It was a cold day, and we weren’t ready to go back home yet, so we popped in to the Three Houseshoes for a snack and a drink.

An open fire, some hummus, pitta breads and a non-alcoholic cocktail, with a coffee by the fire to finish off.

Normally I’d post only once I’ve had a proper meal there, but I heard on the pub’s instagram that they are being taken over by Cambs Cuisine. I’m in two minds about this, since it’s great to see Cambs Cuisine grow and become stronger, but at the same time it’s always great to be able to have small local businesses as well.

Before they switch, I highly urge you to go check them out.

They’re doing a special menu until the 21st January: “Italian-themed set menu at £18.50 for 2 courses, to include a glass of Italian wine, available lunch and dinner Tuesday to Friday, and Saturday lunchtime.” I’ll be booking in, will you be joining me?

  1. In this case, I think the takeover by Cambscuisine is a good thing. The Three Horseshoes has changed ownership various times over the years. I’ve eaten there a few times and it’s always been inconsistent in terms of food and service. Sometimes great, sometimes terrible. The only constant was the amazing bread. This past year the hygiene ratings put me off. They had a 2 back in March 2017 and even with the slight improvement to a 3 in October, this shows they don’t really have systems in place to manage a kitchen. An established independent business like Cambscuisine will do some good.

    • It’s great to see the other side – I am very new to the place. It’ll be exciting to see what Cambs Cuisine do to the place.

Hi Pina. John & Julia owned/run The Three Horseshoes for many years, and transferred the lease in 1997. They took it back in summer 2016 when the leaseholders went out of business. Personally I’ve only had good experiences and I’ve been many times. It’s always important as you know to share your feedback with the restaurant so they can improve.
Anyway I think it’s a shame that we are losing yet another dazzling independent. In your experience you should be aware that hygiene ratings can be dependent on such minor things as not keeping the cheeses fridge temperature during service (as eaters we know differently of course). Larger groups do have the infrastructure to deal with the paperwork that guarantees 5* ratings that’s for sure, and I’m not denying the importance of that. But larger groups do also have a tendency to ‘buy in’ desserts, buy all their wines from the same region/producer, and focus on margins at the expense of seasonality and creativity. I guess that’s probably what it takes to sustain a business in this area these days. I know of more owner-run independents who will be closing their doors in 2018… I’m just going to do my best to support them before the chains & groups close in even further! X

  2. Regarding the accidental deletion of photos: Might i suggest dropbox? If you have an account, and the dropbox app on your phone, you can sync your phone pics to your account any time you’re on wifi. There’s any number of ways to do the same thing, but this one is nicely thought-free and since it’s already in the cloud after sync, I can grab it at any time.

And, as always, everything you posted looks delicious!

It was a faff on my Huawei for some reason. I can’t remember why. Next month I’m getting back to iPhone so it’ll be automatically installed.
